Newman, Laina Lea Hanhila
68, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. Laina was born to Matt and Merna Hanhila in Kingman, Arizona on May 21, 1947. She grew up in the Phoenix area and graduated from Paradise Valley High School in January of 1965. She received a Bachelors' and a Masters' degree from University of Arizona and a Doctorate in Education from Arizona State University. Laina touched many lives as an educator for 34 years in the Paradise Valley Unified School District. In addition, she was a volunteer for the City of Phoenix Judicial System and offered her time with numerous other community organizations. During her retirement years, she was an active member of the All Saints' Episcopal Church. Laina is survived by her loving husband Stanley, two sons Jeffrey (Ann) and Steven (Larissa), sisters Lissa (Bob) MacLean and Lynne (Howard) Powers, and her brother Mo Hanhila (Jennifer). She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Avarey, Brighton, Mckinley, Scout, Sawyer, and Poppy; several nieces and nephews; and extended family. A memorial service will be held at the All Saints' Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 a.m. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to All Saints Episcopal Church and Day School; 6300 N Central Ave. Phoenix Arizona, 85012.
