Obituary Condolences

Chambliss, Len
was an exceptional man of 94 who, until a few weeks prior to his death on August 6, 2016, lived independently in the house he and his wife, Anne, had bought 57 years ago. He had a remarkable, full life and touched the hearts of many with his quick wit, open intellect and inspiring integrity. He enjoyed a loving partnership of 53 years with Anne when she passed in 1999. As a WWII Navy veteran, he used the G.I. Bill to obtain a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Kentucky. He and Anne came to Phoenix in 1955 with their two young boys, Barry and Rick. Len began a successful career at Garett Airesearch (now Honeywell), retiring in 1986. After retirement, he and Anne traveled the world. He took up golf and reached a proud handicap of 14 until his back made golf too frustrating. In his 80s, he then learned ballroom dancing and had the good fortune to fall in love a second time with the lovely Doris Howell. For years prior to his death, he had dinner every Sunday night with his son, Rick, Rick's wife, Sally, and whatever other family or friends were in town. He could tell a joke better than most, enjoyed a bourbon cocktail before dinner and was just good company. Barry proceeded him in death but gave Len five grandchildren. Rick lagged behind with two more. At last count, the Chambliss clan included 7 grandchildren, their spouses and 12 great grandchildren. Services will be held at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, 4455 E. Lincoln Dr., Paradise Valley on August 12, 2016, with a viewing at 1:00 p.m. and service at 2:00. For those inclined, Len can be honored by a contribution to Hospice of the Valley (1510 East Flower St., Phoenix). Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Mortuary.
