Obituary Condolences

Boyd, Lloyd Edgar
Beloved father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. A proud resident of Sun City West, Arizona for 28 years, longtime resident of Minneapolis and East Grand Forks, Minnesota and Rolla, North Dakota. Lloyd passed away peacefully in the company of caregivers and family on April 13, 2013, at the age of 92 years and 11 months. Lloyd was born on May 8, 1920 in the home of his parents Clifton and Edna Boyd, in Rolla, North Dakota. After spending time in Oregon with grandparents during part of the depression, Lloyd moved with his family to East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and then to Duluth, Minnesota where he graduated from Central High School. After high school Lloyd went to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota. Near the end of his junior year Lloyd enlisted in the Army Air Corps, was shipped to Texas, and later commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant having been trained as a B-25 bombardier. He shipped out in May 1943 from Morrison Field, West Palm Beach Florida to Kabrit Egypt. He was initially assigned to the 12th Bomb group, 83rd bomb squadron at Sfax Tunisia, and later requested transfer to the 434th bomb squadron. He flew the first of his 65 EAM combat air missions on May 12, 1943. Lloyd was stationed in Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, and India while on active duty. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and Captain, and served as the 434th bomb squadron bombardier in Tezagon, India. Lloyd was honorably discharged on October 8, 1945. His decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters, EAM Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon. Upon returning to the U.S., Lloyd went back the University of Minnesota, changed his major to microbiology, and put his skills to use in state service. He retired from the State of Minnesota Health Medical Laboratories as Chief Microbiologist in 1985. Lloyd married and was passionately devoted to the love of his life, Ruth (Edelson), in 1948 and enjoyed 60 years thinking, acting, and loving as one with her. Ruth and Lloyd relocated to Sun City West, Arizona in 1985 where he was active in the Silver Craft and Lapidary clubs. He also very much enjoyed a good game of snooker or eight ball, depending on how many quarters you had to give away! He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth on April 12, 2008, parents Clifton and Edna Boyd, his sister Lois (Clark) of San Antonio Texas, his brother Donald Boyd, of Duluth, Minnesota, and granddaughter Elizabeth Mitchell of Starbuck, Minnesota. Lloyd was the proud father of, and is survived by, his three children; Teresa Mitchell (Bruce) of Starbuck, Minnesota, Kevin (Beverly) of Bosque Farms, New Mexico, and David (Felicia) of Lakeville Minnesota, as well as 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. We will forever miss your quick wit, love of laughter in the room, and how you made such a lasting impression on all who were lucky enough to have met you, even for just one day! A memorial celebrating Lloyd's life and love will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday May 24, 2013 at the Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel, 13738 W. Camino del Sol, Sun City West, Arizona. Memorial donations to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, or to the Wounded Warrior Project are preferred.
