Curry, Lorraine G.
Lorraine G. Curry, 87, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away on November 2, 2015. She was born in Casa Grande, AZ, to William A. and Ruth Gray on October 16, 1928. She married Pat B. Curry in 1947. Lorraine graduated from Phoenix Union High School, received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Arizona State University (then Arizona State College) in 1950. She later went on to receive her Master of Arts in Education from Northern Arizona University (also, then called Arizona State College) in 1963. Lorraine had a long career in education, in which she taught every level from kindergarten to graduate school, then retired as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction for the Flagstaff Public Schools. She taught in public schools in Snowflake, Phoenix, Tucson, and Flagstaff, AZ; Provo, UT; and at Brigham Young University as well as a summer session at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. She was a member of numerous professional and civic organizations, including Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa, the National Educational Association, the Arizona Education Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the Arizona Music Educators Association. She was honored as Arizona Music Educator of the Year in 1975, and as Flagstaff Citizen of the Year in 1985. The Currys were very active in music and the arts. Lorraine played the flute, piano and organ. She was the organist at Sunnyslope Presbyterian Church. Later, she was a member of the choir and assistant organist at Flagstaff Federated Church, and Director of Children's Choirs. She also played the flute in the Flagstaff Symphony, the Utah Valley Symphony, and the Flagstaff Festival Orchestra. In 1985, the Currys retired, traveled extensively, and kept up their commitment in the arts. Lorraine is survived by her son, Bryan Curry and her daughter, Barbara Curry-Kaufman. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held Monday, November 9, 2015, at 10am at the Beatitudes Life Center, 1610 W Glendale Ave, Phx, AZ.
