Margaret Mary "Peg" Podlich Obituary
Podlich, Margaret "Peg" Mary
65, of Phoenix passed away on November 22, 2015, with her family by her side. She was born in Mesa, AZ, on April 7, 1950 to parents Dr. William Frederick Podlich, Jr and Margaret Mary (Elliott) Podlich. Peg grew up in Tempe and attended Tempe High School for three years, graduated from the American International School of Kabul (Afghanistan) in 1968 and received her B.A. with honors from Arizona State University in 1972. She served in the Peace Corps from 1973 to 1975, teaching English to middle school girls in Songkhla, Thailand. Upon her return to Tempe, she reunited with the love of her life, Clayton Nels Esterson, and the two were married at the home of her parents on August 12, 1978. Volunteering was a key in Peg's life. In the early 1990s, she combined both her love of teaching and art history to bring the Masterpiece Art program to several Kyrene schools, recruiting and teaching parents to give presentations to their children's classes. Because she loved reading, Peg shelved books at Ironwood Library and participated in the Tempe Experience Corps student tutoring program for 4 years at Kyrene de los Ninos school. In addition, starting in 2008, Peg served as a volunteer usher at Grady Gammage Auditorium. Family was very important to Peg, and she loved to travel. Her favorite times were heading off to birthday parties, wedding celebrations and family reunions of all sorts. Peg is survived by Clayton, her husband of 37 years; their two sons, James Matthew Esterson of Arlington, VA, and Andrew William Esterson of Sacramento, CA; her mother Margaret Podlich of Tempe; brother William F. Podlich of Santa Ana, CA; sister Jan Hunt Podlich of Chandler; aunt Pearl Elizabeth (Podlich) McNamara of Brookline, MD; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services are Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 at 1 PM at Valley Unitarian Universalist, 6400 W Del Rio, Chandler, AZ
