Sweeney, Mary Catherine
of Chandler, Arizona passed away peacefully on August 16, 2016. "Mary K" was born the youngest of six children to Edward and Loretta Crowley Conley in Bradford, Pennsylvania on Cinco de Mayo, 1930. Mary K attended St. Bernard of Clairvaux School in Bradford and obtained a Bachelor's Degree of Sociology from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA in 1952. She married James Charles Sweeney on April 24, 1954 in Bradford and celebrated almost 47 years of marriage before Jim's death on January 4, 2001. Mary K and Jim proudly raised their family of nine children in Olean, North Syracuse and Manlius, New York before moving to Tempe, Arizona in December 1981. Mary K resided in Chandler for the past 12 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chandler and had previously worked in the Mesa School District. Mary K was a kind, generous and elegant lady. Her family adored her. She had a wonderful sense of humor and her easy going personality made everyone around her feel special. Mary K showed us how to live a wonderful life and left a legacy marked by the beautiful way in which she raised her family. Mary K is survived by two daughters; Anne (Richard) Malpiedi of Chandler and Barbara (Michael) Calhoun of Granger, IN, seven sons; John (Andrea) Sweeney of Cypress, TX, James (Theola) Sweeney Jr. of Kingston, MA, Dr. Daniel (Karen) Sweeney of Rochester, NY, Carl (Susan) Sweeney of Rancho Bernardo, CA, Mark (Nora) Sweeney of Highlands Ranch, CO, Robert (Denise) of Chandler, AZ and Matthew Sweeney of Flagstaff, AZ, one sister; Joan Conley Smith of Bradford, PA and one sister-in-law; Margaret Sweeney of Brewster, MA, eleven granddaughters, fourteen grandsons and fifty-six nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters; Rita Conley Harris and Anne Conley Quinn and brothers; Francis Conley and Thomas Conley. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Sharon Krystofik and the loving caregivers at Elegant Care II. A memorial mass to celebrate Mary K's life will be held on Thursday; August 25 at 10:00 at St. Mary's Catholic Church 230 W. Galveston St. in Chandler. A graveside service will be held on Friday; August 26 at 10:30 in the the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd, Phx. Memorial contributions may be made to the Desert Southwest 1028 East McDowell Rd. Phoenix AZ 85006.
