Flanagan, Mary Helen Goodwin
Mary Helen Goodwin Flanagan, born Aug. 11, 1935 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Phoenix, AZ, died Feb. 11, 2016 in Tempe. Mary Helen graduated from Tempe High, attended Stephen's College in Columbia, MO and later ASU where she earned her degree in Home Ec. She later earned a MA degree in Family Relations & Counseling from ASU. She married Athol Carl (A.C.) Flanagan on May 11, 1956. Mary Helen taught at McKemy Junior High, Ritter School and Connolly Junior High. She retired in 1992. A founding member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Tempe, she was active as in church life and served on the Altar Guild for over 50 years. She was also very active in Episcopal Marriage Encounter. Mary Helen passed away surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband, A.C. Flanagan; her daughters, Maryeileen Flanagan (Antonio Durazo-Moreno), Cheryl (Frank) Grimes, and Jennifer (Jerry) Blanchard; her sister, Kathleen (Daly) Bales; six grandchildren; six nieces and a nephew. She is predeceased by her parents, Kemper and Edson Mary (Mickey) Goodwin and brother Michael Goodwin. Private burial will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. A public Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, 2 PM February 20th at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 1735 S. College Avenue, Tempe. Mary Helen wished everyone wear bright, happy colors to her funeral. People attending the Celebration of Life are requested, if possible, to contribute a written memory and/or photo of them with Mary Helen. Cards will be provided at the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to groups working to eradicate Alzheimer's and fibromyalgia. Arrangements by Tempe Mortuary.
