Kelly, Mildred H.
The Guest Book is expired.
Millie Kelly passed away at her home in Tempe, AZ on September 28, 2013, just short of her 93rd birthday. Born Mildred Helena Corkery on October 24, 1920 in Jamaica Plain, MA; the youngest of 10 children. At the tender age of 15, Millie befriended the Kelly family that moved into her building and promptly caught the attention of the handsome and younger Paul Kelly. Millie & Paul married on December 26, 1942 and shortly thereafter Paul was shipped overseas as the captain of a B-17 bomber crew in WWII. The crew, very taken with Millie, unanimously agreed to christen their B-17 the "Millie K" in her honor. She watched over them for 26 successful mis
sions and saw them all come home safe and sound. While raising six children, Millie and Paul lived in Massachusetts, Florida, New York and New Jersey due to Paul's Army Air Corps and TWA airline careers, finally settling in Paradise Valley, AZ in 1972. Millie's special gift was her heart and she would spend the rest of her life watching over people: her kids and extensive family, many friends and total strangers who needed help: hitch-hikers in need of a lift, strangers on an airplane who needed a shoulder to cry on or just someone to listen to them, someone in line at the grocery store who was a little short of cash, donating time, toys and clothes to an orphanage or volunteering her time at a Hospice center. Millie would continue to bring joy and laughter to many people as one of the Forever Young Dancers, tap dancing her way into people's hearts well into her 70's! Millie is survived by Paul, her devoted husband of 71 years, and their six children: Paul (Lynn), Janice, David, Robert, Michael (Janis) and Christine (Brad Herseth); six grandchildren: Kirsten Chambers (Chad), Adam (Megan), Matthew, Brian, Scott and Christopher; four great-grandchildren: Olivia and Grace Chambers, Finnegan and Lucia Kelly; and many nieces and nephews. Her family would like to extend their grateful appreciation to the staff at Friendship Village Tempe Health Care Center and
for their care and compassion. A celebration of Millie's life will be held at 2PM on Saturday, October 5th at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale, AZ, with reception following. Donations may be made to
