Nancy E. Harloff Obituary
Harloff, Nancy E.
peacefully passed away on May 5, 2016. Nancy was born on September 23, 1944 in Mineola, NY to loving parents Clifford Munro and Elizabeth Young Ormsby. She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Robert Carleton Harloff; daughter, Deborah Elizabeth Brettfeld (Rich); loving grandmother of Richard Carleton Brettfeld; and sister, Marilyn Young Hermansen (Roy). Nancy and Bob were high school sweethearts, and met August 21, 1960. Nancy worked as a secretary, and also as a flight attendant with United Airlines, graduating from UAL's Chicago, IL Training Center in November, 1966. Bob enlisted in the Navy in February 1966, and while stationed in Newport, RI, Bob's ship, U.S. Fred T. Berry DD858, was in dry dock March, 1967 at the Boston Naval Shipyard. Nancy was based in Chicago with UAL, and arranged layovers in Boston so she could be with Bob. Bob wasn't about to let Nancy fly away again, and proposed to her on March 24, 1967, clipping her wings. They were married on May 4, 1968 in the Community Church of Little Neck, NY by Rev. Warren E. Darnell, who buried Bob's brother, David; christened Bob; confirmed Nancy; baptized Deborah. They started married life in a small one room apartment in Douglaston, NY. In August, 1969, when Bob's ship was transferred, they moved to Norfolk, VA. Bob was discharged from the Navy in February, 1970 and they moved to El Paso, TX. Their beautiful daughter, Deborah, was born, May 6, 1971, and Nancy became a full time mom while Bob worked at the Phelps Dodge copper refinery and attended The University of Texas at El Paso, graduating May, 1974. During that period Nancy pulled Bob through with patience, understanding and love. In July, 1978 they moved to (Mehlville) St. Louis, MO, then in January, 1980 to Monmouth Junction, NJ; and finally, in July, 1985 to Glendale, AZ where Bob retired from Phelps Dodge in 1998, and they enjoyed their retirement years together. Nancy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who dearly loved her family and friends. She will be sorely missed and remembered by all who knew her.
