Nancy Pool Obituary

Pool, Nancy May
Nancy May Pool, age 51, passed away peacefully at home in Phoenix, AZ. surrounded by her family on December 7, 2011. Nancy was born in Washington, D.C. on June 17, 1960 to Dr. Arthur and Eileen Schwartz. She was the last of five children; her siblings are Amy Cuatto (Phoenix), Andy Schwartz (Mill Valley, CA.), Jainah Hamann (Bronxville, NY), and Beth Gold (Encino, CA). The Schwartz family moved to Phoenix in 1962 when Arthur accepted a position to assist in opening the new Barrow Neurological Institute where he worked for over 40 years as a neuro-psychologist. Nancy and her family lived in north central Phoenix during her childhood where she attended Royal Palm Elementary School. She also attended Sunnyslope High School where she excelled in the dive team, tennis and gymnastics. Nancy initially attended Arizona State University and then transferred to Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff where she earned a bachelors of science degree in Art Management. While at NAU, she served as the president of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity. During her senior year at NAU, Nancy met Bill (also in his senior year at NAU) when he delivered a truck load of firewood to her on a cold winter night. The rest is history as Nancy and Bill were inseparable for the next 30 years. They were married in her parent's Phoenix backyard in 1985 while Nancy was working at the Heard Museum in Phoenix. In 1989, Nancy and Bill had their first child, Aaron, followed by Laurie Beth (1990), Rachel (1993) and Elizabeth (1995). Rather than working during these years, Nancy was a stay-at-home mom. Nancy was an excellent seamstress who frequently made gifts for her family and friends. Nancy was very active in her children's schools and often volunteered in the nurse's office or the kindergarten classes. In recent years she played violin with the Phoenix College Community Orchestra. In 2008, Nancy was diagnosed with brain cancer and for the next three years underwent several surgeries and treatments. Through it all, she maintained her sense of humor and beautiful smile. Nancy's legacy is her children who are all becoming very successful in their endeavors. A celebration of Nancy's life will be held at The Heard Museum's Steele Auditorium in Phoenix at 1pm on Friday December 23. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in her name to Hospice of the Valley.

I knew Nancy as a kind, caring person. I was with the Phoenix College Community Orchestra where she played violin. She loved playing, as did her mother and father. It was a joy to know all three of them.

I knew Nancy from the Delta Sigs and we shared many fun times. Although we lost touch over the years, I remember her for her enthusiasm and zest for life. If Nancy was coming along, we were going to have fun no matter what. My deepest condolences to all of her family and friends.

Nancy and I attended college together. She was smart, witty and fun. Like myself, we enjoyed adventure and spent lots of time exploring the San Francisco peaks in Flagstaff along with trips to California. I will miss her. My sincere condolence goes to her family and friends. Susan Friedberg Clark, Colorado Springs, Colorado

I only met Nancy once, at a teacher's conference at Shea Middle School, our kids were in the same grades. She was so genuine. I'll never forget her. That's why I am recognizing her now. I'm so sorry for the loss to her husband and children. The fact that I only met her once, and she made this impression on me, is a testament to her life. I pray for God's peace and comfort for her family.

I am so sad to learn of Nancy's passing. I will always remember her as such a vivacious individual. She was a "fighter", never giving up in a tennis match or in life. My deep condolences to the Pool & Schwartz families. God bless.
