Nora L. Axton Obituary
Axton, Nora L.
94, of Phoenix, AZ passed away on September 21, 2015. Nora was born to farmers Arthur and Mary Ann (Molly) Hull on March 6,1921. She was born at home near Havana, KS, one of the youngest of 11 children. She was called "Sister" by her siblings, and later "Aunt Sister" by the extended family. As children on a farm, they all learned the value of hard work amid their many, sometimes harrowing, adventures during the years of the Great Depression. When Nora was almost 15, her mother died of flu and meningitis. Nora was able to finish high school and went to Parsons, KS to work in a bank and an insurance company, as well as at the famous Fred and Mabel Mallum's Cafe. That is where she met her future husband, Vernon C. Axton. They married in 1942, and celebrated 57 years together. During that time, they became parents of four great boys: Milton, Joe, David, and Paul. Besides being a busy mother, Nora also enjoyed many other experiences in her life. She was at various times a den mother, shrimp boat captain, 1941 Missouri Western Regional Women's Skeet Champion, co-pilot to Vernon, and business manager. They lived in eight different states across our country, but finally settled here in Phoenix, where she enjoyed working in fashion sales at Switzer's Stores. In their later years, Nora and Vernon enjoyed telling stories of their lives, spending time with the grandkids, traveling and camping through Arizona, California, Kansas, Missouri, and Japan to visit family. Her sons, Milton, Joe, David, Paul, and their wives survive and miss Nora. She is a grandmother to 9 and great-grandmother to 6, almost 7, who will sorely miss her games of dominoes and checkers. Her husband Vernon, her parents, and all eleven of her sisters and brothers predecease her. Services were held at Camelback Christian Church, in Scottsdale, AZ on September 24, 2015, where Nora and Vernon were Charter Members. Arrangements were made by Samaritan Funeral Home, 1505 E. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85006.
