Peter Alexander Lendrum Obituary
Lendrum, Peter Alexander
Peter A. Lendrum, accomplished architect, designer and urban planner, died peacefully on August 2, 2016 in Phoenix after an extended illness. He had an adventurous spirit, loved the outdoors and particularly enjoyed sailing, golf and tennis. He shared many trips around the world with his family and friends and cherished annual vacations to his childhood cabin on Lake Duborne in Canada. His kind heart, big smile, sense of humor and positive energy will be greatly missed. Peter was born in Champaign, IL on April 13, 1934. His father, an architect, instilled a love of simple design and clean aesthetics; sensibilities he turned into a passion for sophisticated and elegant design throughout his life. After earning his BS in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1958, he joined Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Chicago before moving to Phoenix where he worked for Ralph Haver & Associates. In 1963 Peter established his own architectural, engineering and planning firm, Peter A. Lendrum Associates, which he headed for over 45 years. He was the Architect of Record for over 3500 projects in 21 states and 8 countries. His firm's projects earned more than 60 awards for excellence in architecture, landscape and interior design. Peter's expertise and work brought him acclaim on a national level. His projects included the development of state-of-the-art data centers and data storage facilities, high-tech printing, manufacturing and assembly facilities, headquarters and office complexes, hotels, banks, golf communities and clubhouses, as well as private residences. Peter was one of the youngest architects in North America to be elected a Fellow by the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) in 1981. He also held numerous industry certifications including National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB). He gave to his profession unselfishly throughout his life and made meaningful contributions while serving on boards including the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration, the Arizona State University Architecture Foundation and the State of Arizona Board of Vocational Education. While he was modest about his contributions to civic projects, his outstanding service and leadership was widely recognized and praised. Peter served on the City of Phoenix Planning Commission for eight years including two years as Chairman. He was a Board Member of the Town of Paradise Valley Planning Commission, Phoenix Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, Phoenix Civic Plaza Building Corporation, and Chairman of the Board of the Downtown Phoenix Committee. Peter was also a member of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), World Presidents' Organization (WPO), the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, Phoenix 40 and the Paradise Valley Country Club.
Peter is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jamie Robertson Lendrum, his daughters and sons-in-law Laura Lendrum (Jeff Cannon) of New York City and Tiffiny Lendrum (Adam Eastwood) of Los Angeles, his son, James Alex Lendrum of Phoenix and his sister, Nancy Modzelewski (Ernie) of Phoenix. He was predeceased by his son, Peter A. Lendrum, Jr., his parents, James and Dorothea Lendrum and his first wife Carol Lundin Lendrum.
A private memorial service will be held in Battlepoint, Canada.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials to be sent to Brophy College Preparatory - Peter Lendrum Memorial at 4701 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85012.
