Ralph William "Bill" Burden Obituary
Burden, Ralph William "Bill"
82, of Mesa, Arizona, was called home to the Lord on Thursday, February 14, 2013. Bill was born on December 20, 1930 to Ralph William Burden Sr. and Edith (Fox) Burden in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in Akron, Ohio with a keen interest in the outdoors and in history, which would accompany him in life. In high school, he became a member of the ROTC and, upon graduation, joined the United States Army Reserves, which he was a member of until 1952. Bill attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin then transferred to North Park Theological Seminary in Lakeland, Florida, where he received a B.A. in Arts and Science. As a young boy, Bill met his future wife, Janice Jeffery at a picnic, but not until a senior prom date did he become smitten with her and proposed to her upon graduation from high school. They married in June, 1950. After college, Bill joined a cousin in a career in radio that spanned over two decades. Bill was involved in broadcasting, sales, and management of radio stations that he partnered and owned across the United States. In 1970, Bill relocated his family to Phoenix where he was employed with McCulloch Companies. He launched his own real estate company, Recreational Properties, where he spent his remaining years as owner/broker. He took great pride in his business and truly relished the friends and business associates he made during this time. Bill was a member of several organizations including The Barbershop Harmony Association of America, Lion's Club International, American Broadcaster's Association, Arizona Association of Realtors, and Good Sam RV Club of Arizona. Bill enjoyed many activities, but his favorites were hunting, which he taught and shared with his son, sons-in-law, and grandchildren, exploring history, family genealogy, and traveling. With his keen passion for history and traveling, Bill and his wife, Janice, traveled throughout the United States, South America, and Europe. On a more memorable trip to England, Bill and Janice traced and documented the Burden family history and stayed in a cottage built by his ancestors over 400 years ago. As a result, Bill has given his family a thorough geological and genealogical trail dating back to 1066. His legacy is his family and it lives on in the hearts and souls of his wife of 62 years, Janice (Jeffery) Burden; his daughter Linda and son-in-law Jeffrey Dexter; grandchildren, Karen Angeley, Bethany Cristman, and Jonathan Dexter; daughter Luann and son-in-law Neville Storm, grandchildren Ryan (preceeded in death) and Sean; daughter Brenda Burden-Dame and grandchildren, Brandon, Joel, and Reannon; daughter Susan and son-in-law Marc Jacott, and grandchildren, Marc Thomas "Tommy" and Justin; and, his son Ralph William "Bill" Burden III and grandchildren Christopher "CJ" Jenkins and Joshua William Burden. Also surviving are his brother Robert Norman Burden and June (Burden) Burmeister, along with nephews, nieces, and great grandson Brice Dame. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held at Friday, February 22 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale, Arizona followed by burial at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, Bill's family has asked that memorial contributions be made to The or the .
