Santa, Deacon Reed E.
Former St. Paul resident, Deacon Reed E. Santa, age 89, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away November 19, 2015 in Mesa, AZ following a lengthy illness. Reed was born August 21, 1926 in St. Paul, MN to Eugene and Elizabeth (Korngable) Santa. He was a graduate of Johnson High School, class of 1944 in January at age 17. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, having served in the Atlantic and South Pacific as a gunners mate on the destroyer U.S.S. Charles P. Cecil DD-835. Reed was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended Dunwoody Industrial Institute on the GI Bill learning the printing trade. Reed worked for Perfection Type as a monotype operator and then the City of Maplewood until his retirement in 1984 when he and Betty moved to Arizona. A man of great faith and goodness who touched the lives of many, Reed became a Deacon, in the Phoenix Diocese in 1993 and served at Holy Cross Catholic Church and All Saints Catholic Church in Mesa. He also served the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in many roles compassionately caring for the poor and needy in the community. Reed is survived by six children: Sue (Gerald) Mortenson of St. Louis Park, MN, Mary (Gary) Hite of Maplewood, MN, John (Penny) of Longville, MN, Stephen (Linda) of Crystal, MN, Chris (Larry) Anderson of Mesa, AZ and Grace (Jack) Wachlarowicz of Mahtomedi, MN; twelve grandchildren: Beth (Andy), Kathy (Scott), Jessica, Carrie, Michelle (Steve), Matthew, Andrea, Joshua, Jenna (Emmett), Brendan, Amanda and John, and thirteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister Shirley Parramore of St. Paul, MN. He was preceded by his parents, his beloved wife of 53 years Betty (nee Stephani), infant daughter Barbara and grandson Erik Mortenson. Visitation will Monday, November 30, 2015 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 1534 N. Recker Rd., Mesa, AZ 85205. Deacon Reed will be returned to St. Paul, MN; a Memorial Service will be arranged at Transfiguration Catholic Church and burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Reed's name may be directed to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at All Saints Catholic Church or Friends for Life Animal Rescue, 143 W.
