Sandheger, Richard L.
82, of Sun Lakes passed away peacefully on September 7th , 2015. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Sarah. Richard was born in Norwood, Ohio in 1932 to parents Leo and Bernadine. He loved planes and was a pilot at the age of 18 and flew for the Civil Air Patrol. He joined the US Army and served in the Korean War. Dad then joined the forest service in the Payson, Arizona area then began his dream job with the Department of Public Safety as a Highway Patrolman. With his pilot experience , he started the Ranger helicopter program with DPS and was a pivotal part of the rescue team. His daughters remember two young men who thanked him for saving their lives by gifting him with a bottle of Jack Daniels. Richard retired from DPS as a lieutenant and went to work for United Technologies as the program manager at Hamilton Test Systems. He was also an expert marksman and was a member of the Paloma Ferrera Pistol Club,the VFW, NRA and the AOPA. Dad had many accomplishments and his longest, most rewarding was his marriage to Sarah in August of 1957. Sarah was the love of his life and he missed her terribly when she passed in 2012. Now he is at peace and they are together again. Richard is survived by his daughters, Loretta Carlson, Susan Hornung and Mary Shupe. Grandsons Nick, Zach and Freddy Hornung, Ian Carlson and granddaughter Jenifer Montoya and his sister Loretta Gaylor who resides in Albuquerque, NM. He will be remembered by his many close friends. Services will be held Friday, Sept. 11th 10:00 am at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 North Saguaro Blvd. Fountain Hills Az. Internment will be at the Young Cemetery at 3pm.
