Richard Sterling Wilkinson Obituary
Wilkinson, Richard Sterling
94, passed away on September 5, 2015 in Phoenix, Arizona. He is survived by his beloved wife, Florence and daughter, Patricia. He was predeceased earlier this year by his other daughter, Karen. Born in Union Level, Virginia on October 8, 1920, Dick grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia enjoying the many wonders of the Chesapeake Bay. He made his way to Washington, DC before enlisting in the Army Air Corps, serving his country during WWII as a radio engineer, "flying the hump" between India and China, a particularly dangerous route over the Himalayan Mountains. He married Florence Garritsen of Detroit, Michigan in 1951 and they made their home and raised their daughters in Michigan. Dick worked in finance at Chrysler Corporation before beginning his second and favorite career as a professor of International Business at Ferris State College. Retirement lead them to Florida before settling in Phoenix in 1996. All who knew Dick were touched by his kind, gentle and friendly demeanor. The quintessential "Southern Gentlemen"; he loved family, friends and life. His many varied passions and pursuits included music, playing harmonica at home and recorder with "The Spirit Winds" at his church. He was also a photographer, writer, gardener, nature lover, voracious reader and adventurous traveler. A service celebrating his long and full life will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 19, 2015 at The Church of the Beatitudes, 555 W. Glendale, Phoenix, AZ 85021. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Some of Dick's favorite charities include Hospice of the Valley and the National Audubon Society.
