SgtMaj Robert B. Robinson, Sr. USMC (Ret.), 89, of Surprise, AZ, was peacefully called home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 30, 2013. He was the devoted husband of his loving wife of 70 years, Ethel, the proud father of six children, and a decorated life-long Marine Corps combat veteran involved in three different wars. Born in Winslow, AZ on November 10, 1923, he became what those with whom he served thought of as a "special Marine." Enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in November 1943, he served his country in World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. He made his first amphibious landing in Saipan in June 1944, followed by landings at Tinian and Pelelui Islands. In August 1945, he witnessed the signing of the Japanese surrender aboard the USS MISSOURI. He was awarded numerous medals for his combat engagements, including two Purple Hearts for his service in Korea. In one of his two tours in Viet Nam, he was proud to have been able to meet up with his son, Bob, Jr., also a U.S. Marine serving there. He rose to the rank of Sergeant Major, retiring in November 1973. He was a private pilot, earning his wings in 1948, loved to travel the world, both in his country's service and with his wife and family. He was a caring father and husband, always making time for his family despite his many overseas deployments. He held a special place for the outdoors and the many animals that he "adopted" throughout the years. His strong sense of values and love for his family, church and country will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife, Ethel, he is survived by his six children: Bob, Jr., San Marcos, CA; Don, North Bend, WA; Larry, Tumwater, WA; Steve, Camano Island, WA; Penny, Lake Tapps, WA; and Chuck, Seattle, WA. , 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at the Grand Community Baptist Church, 18350 N. Goldwater Ridge Dr., Surprise, AZ, at 10:00 am. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made to Gideon's International or the Grand Community Baptist Church.
