Roy A. Hempel

1923 - 2016 Obituary Condolences Gallery
Hempel, Roy A.
He was 93 yrs, but always had his sights on hitting 100 yrs (& truth be told, he truly wanted to hit 110 yrs) - whoa! Dad was born in Ohio in 1923. In his school days joined Boy Scouts & worked up to Eagle Scout - was very proud of that. Dad was drafted into U.S Army in WW II & served Dec 1944 - March 1946. His occupational specialty was Radio Operator Low Speed 776; other qualifications were marksman in Carbine, Pistol & Rifle. He spent time in France with mortar shells flying overhead; then moving on to Austria with his unit (tried skiing & liked it). Dad always did have a love for electronics. In 1956 he drove to Arizona with his new bride to start a new job that he landed at Motorola in Scottsdale. He then embarked on starting two small electronics businesses in Phoenix & eventually sold them. After several years, Dad moved on to Hughes Aircraft in California where he retired from. In retirement years, Dad loved to go to dances & hang out with friends. He was a charmer... had an eye for the ladies. He also maintained very close relationships with friends throughout the years. A big hobby of his that developed over the years was writing screen plays. He has over 200+ copyrighted in WashDC. His next task was to market & hopefully sell at least one ... now he left that to me - hmmm! One of dad's favorite questions to ask anyone (or those he may have met 60 seconds ago) was: "Do you know anyone in Hollywood?" He was a very nice, sweet guy & never shy with conversation. Most importantly Dad was young at heart! We will miss dad! Roy is survived by his great/grandkids (bless their hearts), daughter Lynn Perez & son-in-law Bill Perez, son-in-law Steve Matney and joining daughter Vicky Matney for togetherness in the sweet hereafter.
