Prather, Samuel E.
90, of Sun City West passed away on February 1, 2016. Sam was a proud Seattle, WA native, born to Samuel W. and Ruth Black Prather November 10, 1925. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1943 and proudly served his country during WWII. As a First Lieutenant for the Army Air Corp and as a navigator, he flew missions in the Philippines. Following his military service, Sam attended the University of Washington graduating in 1950 with two degrees, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity where he served as president in 1948-49. He received numerous academic honors, including membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi. Sam enjoyed a 33 year career with Crown Zellerbach working in Seattle and various locations in Louisiana. He retired in 1985 as their Assistant Chief Engineer. Sam is survived by his wife, Rita Mason Prather, sons, Thomas W. Prather and Paul A. Prather, daughter Kathryn Prather Smithhart (Rick), two grandsons, Sam R. Smithhart and Scott W. Smithhart, several nieces and a nephew. Sam was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan (Jody) E. Craver, his parents and two siblings, Hubert P. Prather and Janet Miller. He will be laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery in Washington State, May 9, 2016.
