Ost, Selma
Selma Ost, 85, of Phoenix, passed away on September 28, 2015. She graduated from Queens College with a BA degree in Spanish Literature. After college, she worked as an executive secretary until she married Harvey in 1954. Selma engaged in various charitable organizations and endeavors including Hadassah, Friends of the Merrick Library, and the tutoring of English skills for young Spanish speaking children. Of note, she ascended to the Presidency of her local chapter of Hadassah. Selma returned to the workforce in the mid 1970's doing mostly secretarial type work. The family moved to Scottsdale in 1979. She worked as an insurance underwriter until she became the executive secretary to the Director of the Kivel Geriatric Center of Phoenix as well as the organization's Fundraising Coordinator. Selma founded the Henrietta Szold Chapter of Hadassah in Phoenix and served as President. She was also an active participant and officer of the Brandeis University National Women's Committee and National Council of Jewish Women. Selma was pre-deceased by her grandson, Jordan Ost. Survivors include her husband Harvey, sons Gary Ost and Alan (Kara) Ost, brother Eugene (Elaine) Holt, grandsons Stephen Ost, Isaac Ost, Robert Ost and Matthew Ost, and ex-daughter-in-law Denise Greenblatt. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Phoenix Memorial Park, 200 W. Beardsley Road in Phoenix.
