Del Re, Thelma
90, passed away on August 25, 2013. Thelma was born in Benwood, West Virginia on July 5, 1923 to Frank and Anna Meyers. She attended Moundsville High School and graduated in 1941. She was married to Alfred Del Re for 60 years. After high school, Thelma took great pride in walking to work each day with her father to the Fostoria Glass Company in Moundsville. She married Alfred in 1946 and began their family. With three kids in tow, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1949 and ran a small restaurant on 32nd Street and Van Buren called The Little Dutch Girl Café. The Café was eventually sold and in 1954 they opened Del Re Surplus in South Phoenix. Three more children were born and Thelma and Alfred raised their family while also supporting the daily business operations. They retired in 1982 when they sold the business to their sons, Al and Joe. Thelma continued to enjoy the business, supporting her sons and associating with the many friends she had made over the years. Thelma was an excellent seamstress and cook. She took great passion in making huge Italian dinners every Sunday, enjoying her children, sons and daughters-in-law and grandchildren at the dining room table together. As she was always a very selfless woman, she never sat down to eat until everyone else was done and had more than they could possibly eat. Her most important achievement was her family and having good times together. Some of Thelma's fondest memories are of her many travels, enjoying the company of her best friend, Nancy Hammer. She never met a casino she didn't like, and she has been known to enjoy fishing trips with her sons and husband. During the past couple of months, Thelma's family has been together daily, caring for her, comforting her and granting her every wish. She would say frequently, "This has been the best time of my life". Her biggest concern was to make sure her family was all together and that we knew she was happy. Thelma is survived by her six children; Al, Jr., Monica, Jim (Jane), Joanna (Mike), Joe (Sandy) and Gina (Manny). She is also survived by her eight grandchildren James, Lisa, Nicole, Natalia, Garrett, Justin, Damien and Isabella, and three great- grandchildren Quintin, Wyatt and Morgan. She is preceded in death by her husband Alfred Del Re, her parents, and her siblings Florence Lusk, Betty Chapman and Jim Meyers. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Basilica, 231 N. 3rd Street, Phoenix, Arizona, with a visitation at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Fund Development, 1510 E.
