Thomas Augustine McCarthy Jr. Obituary
McCarthy, Thomas Augustine, Jr.
was born on February 1, 1937 in Washington D.C. to Thomas A McCarthy, Sr. and Geraldine Wilson McCarthy and died on November 11, 2015 in Glendale, AZ. He was the eldest of 5 children (and the only boy). He grew up in Galveston, TX where he attended Ball High School. He was in the Jr. ROTC, a member of the golf team and the marching band. He attended St. Edwards University for 2 years and transferred to the University of Montana (his parents Alma Mater) where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He went on to earn his J.D. degree from the University of Texas School of Law. Tom moved to Arizona in 1963 and spent his early years in the Maricopa County Attorneys' Office. He spent the remainder of his career in the City of Glendale. He served as the Glendale City Attorney for several years. He was honored this past summer by the State Bar of Arizona for his 50 years of practice. Tom McCarthy and Diane Blommel were introduced to one another by their fathers. Tom was in Law School and Diane was working in the Arizona Attorney General's Office. Although it took a few years, Diane and Tom married in July, 1966 and spent 49 wonderful years together. Tom was active in many civic activities: former Chairman of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce; Board member of the Cactus Pine Girl Scout Council; Glendale Optimist Club; and, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. What really defined Tom was his role as a husband, father and grandfather. He was devoted to his girls - Diane and their daughters, Teresa and Megan. Tom loved antique shopping with his daughters and strolling around Glendale and telling jokes. He had a generous heart, never met a stranger, honest to the core, loved kisses on his cheek and enjoyed gin martinis, shaken not stirred. He always had a warm smile and a kind word. He also was an inveterate prankster. Tom loved the game of golf and played many courses around the country. He participated in the Outhouse Open in Prescott for more than 40 years. He also enjoyed his friends at the Twilight League at Glen Lakes Golf Course. Tom was predeceased by his father Thomas A. McCarthy, Sr. his beloved mother Geraldine Wilson McCarthy and sister Kathleen McCarthy Carroll. He is survived by his wife Diane B. McCarthy; daughter Teresa McCarthy Brown and husband Roger; daughter Megan McCarthy Kuhl and husband Jason; and 5 grandchildren - Riggs Brown, Preston Kuhl, Tucker Brown, Molly Kuhl and Cooper Brown. He is also survived by his sisters Jere McCarthy Meenan, Colleen McCarthy Flood and her husband Mike, Loretta McCarthy, brother in law Terry Carroll and numerous nieces, nephew and grandniece. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and other medical staff at Banner Thunderbird Hospital for their outstanding service in the ICU. A Memorial Mass will be held at Brophy Chapel (4701 North Central Avenue, Phoenix) at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2015 immediately followed by a Celebration of Tom's life at Phoenix Country Club (2901 North 7th Street, Phoenix). In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Tom's memory: St. Vincent de Paul.net or P.O. Box 13600, Phoenix, AZ 85002-3600. Arrangements entrusted to Chapel of the Chimes, Glendale, AZ. For more information: www.chapelofthechimesmortuary.com
