Thomas James McCrea Obituary
McCrea, Thomas James
79, of Tempe passed away on May 29, 2016. Thomas James McCrea was born on March 25, 1937, in Toronto, Canada. He was the third of ten children born to the late John and Sarah McCrea. While growing up in Toronto, Tom loved to camp in the summer and play hockey in the winter. He would remain a life-long Toronto Maple Leafs fan and would talk for hours about his days growing up on Young Street. In 1957, Tom emigrated to Arizona and was met a year later by the love of his life, Joan. They were married October 25, 1958 at the Tempe First Congregational Church. Tom and Joan made their home in Tempe 1963 and stayed for the next 50 years, becoming active and supportive members of the community. Tom was first employed at The Tempe Daily News in 1957 and would vividly describe the fun he had working in downtown Tempe in the 1960's. Lunches at Monte's, Frank Kush-lead football games and hikes in the Superstition Mountains were favorite topics. He was especially proud of his work with ASU students and high school students helping them with their school newspapers. Tom and Joan were among the founding members of Resurrection Church. Having a beautiful tenor voice, Tom was a member of the Resurrection choir. When Joan's sister, Rita, came to live with them, she was the motivation for Tom's lifelong commitment to volunteering for the Tempe Arc. He loved volunteering at the Tempe Arc Thrift Store, and served on the Tempe Arc board and the State Arc board, serving as President and in other capacities. Tom is survived by his daughter Colleen McCrea of Mesa, his son Paul and Amy McCrea of Mesa, and his daughter Leslie McCrea and Peter Maroni of Warwick, RI.
