Tom Monchak Obituary

Monchak, Tom
loving husband and best friend, passed away peacefully, but far too soon on June 23, 2011 in Phoenix with his loving wife Lori holding his hand, following a painful 13-month battle with cancer. Tom accepted his illness the way he faced everything in life - with strength, dedication, knowledge, dignity, compassion, and humor. Born September 6, 1947 in Pueblo, Colorado to Ted and Irene Monchak (Gray), Tom's survivors include his loving Wife and best friend Lori, daughter Brooke, brother Dan (Becky & Adam, Nate, Kyla, and Nick), Lori's son Nick (Michele), new grandson Jaxon and father in law Rod Dismuke. Tom grew up in Pueblo, graduated with Honors from Central High School and then attended the Colorado School of Mines where he earned BS and MS degrees in Engineering Mathmatics. While working on his MS degree, Tom joined the US Army Reserves and served 6 years. Tom loved the Colorado Mountains and enjoyed hiking, fishing, sight-seeing, and golfing there, and was the State Champion junior bowler in 1966. Tom began his professional career while in graduate school with the Colorado Department of Transportation. During his 18-year career there, Tom progressed thru the Engineering ranks to become the Pre-Construction Engineer of the Denver Metropolitan Area. During his 5-year stint in this position, Tom most enjoyed managing the design of Denver Area Freeway projects. This led to Tom's decision to move to Phoenix in 1988 to accept a challenging job opportunity working for a private engineering company on a large contract for the Arizona Department of Transportation managing the design of the new Phoenix Area Freeways. Tom's performance and success on the first contract led to a second contract beginning in 1995. Under the 2 contracts, nearly 100 miles of the new Phoenix Area Freeways were designed, have been constructed and are now serving the traveling public. Tom was always very proud of his contribution to this vital program that is so important to all area residents. Tom was a long-time member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and American Transportation Engineers. While focusing on his professional responsibilities, in 1999 Tom was very fortunate to meet his wife, Lori, who enriched his life enormously. As they settled into their new life following their marriage in Sedona in 2001, they became closer and happier each day. They returned to Sedona often and spent a week there each fall to enjoy hiking the scenic trails and enjoying the fall colors. As their love blossomed, they kenw they wanted to spend as much time with each other as possible. As a result, they both retired in February 2006, and thoroughly enjoyed the amount of and quality of time they had together since then, especially time shared with their children and french bulldog, Shadow. In his later years, Tom thoroughly enjoyed hiking, playing golf, poker, fishing, gardening, raising orchids, collecting kaleidoscopes, watching movies, and anything he was doing with Lori. Tom will be dearly missed by his close family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make any contribution to the charity of your choice. I was saddened to hear of Tom's passing. My words of condolences cannot express how much I will miss seeing him with his beautiful wife, Lori, as they landscaped their yard together and walked their dog, Shadow. He is now pain free in heaven and smiling down and watching over all of those who loved him. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

I was formerly a consultant who worked with Tom when he was with CDOT in Denver. He was truly a good person and a great engineer. I did not know much about his personal life but my experience has been that a person of such integrity and character is most often a great husband and father. I know he will be missed.

My condolences to the family.

I worked with Tom as a consultant when he was pre-construction engineer for CDOT in Denver. He was always fair to me in business and his outside interests made for a more enjoyable relationship. Being a year younger than me, I am pleased to see he had some years of retirement as I contiune to work. I know those were pleasant times for friends and family. My sincere condolences. Tom will be missed. I had the pleasure of working with Tom as the design for the Valley's freeway system progressed. He was the kind of guy you wanted on your side, and I enjoyed time spent with him.

Tom was a college roommate with whom I developed a life-long friendship. He introduced me to a number of phrases (most repeatable)unique to Pueblo, Colorado, his home town. Pueblo has been my home for almost 40 years now and Tom's witticisms still ring true. We also shared many enjoyable times playing poker, gin rummy, pool, bowling, playing golf and following the stock market. His knowledge of sports ran deep. He truly will be missed.

Tom was a wonderful man, husband and father. The luckiest day in my sister's(Lori) life was when she met Tom. He was very kind and generous with his time, wisdom and love. He enriched all of our lives that knew him. He will be missed but he will remain ingrained in our lives for the better and has touched our souls.

I had the pleasure of being Tom and Lori's massage therapist and friend.
Tom is at peace now and no longer in pain, yet his memory will live on forever. Lori, Brooke, Nick and to all of his wonderful family I wish you all peace. Remember the great things about Tom as there were so many. He was my strength when I was knee deep in the middle of a divorce with two small children. He was my life line to the outside world, he used to tell me what was going on in the news and answer all my questions about the freeways around here. His gentle strength showed me a great way to be. Lori and Tom had the most beautiful relationship I had ever seen. They taught me what it meant to appreciate every moment together. How to always be in love. I learned from them and I am grateful. Tom I will miss you and Lori I will be there for you.
Love You
Wendy

I worked with Tom on the valley's freeway planning for many years. He was a very bright and good engineer and his work was a key part of the success the valley has had with completing the freeway system. He will be missed.
