Bates, Virginia "Ginger" Mercer
died following a short illness on Saturday, January 18, 2014. She had lived in Glendale since 1989. Ginger was born August 23, 1932 in Sharon, CT and grew up in Lakeville, CT. She graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village CT and Wheelock College in Boston. She later earned a Master of Education from the University of the District of Columbia. Ginger taught young children from 1954 through the 1990's in public and independent schools in many states including Arizona. Surviving Ginger, along with her husband of 42 years, Brian, are daughter Tamara Williams and her husband Darnell of Silver Spring, MD, son Joshua and his wife Stacie of Chandler AZ, five granddaughters, Tianna, Kristie, Jasmine, Riley and Kyra. A son Kristoph, died in 1988. Also surviving are her brother Donald Mercer and his wife, Betsy of Ashaway RI, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and dozens of close friends all over the world. A private celebration of Ginger's life is to be held in March. Contributions should be directed in Ginger's name to the Wheelock College Scholarship Fund: 200 The Riverway, Boston, MA 02215 .
