Washington, William Melvin
The Guest Book is expired.
On February 1, 1934, in Xenia (Greene County), Ohio, William Melvin Washington was the first-born child of George William Washington and Mary Anna (Martin) Washington. His family relocated to Tucson, Arizona and later to Phoenix where, still a teenager, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. William married Arlene Jeanette Pleasant in 1959 in Lordsburg, New Mexico. He became a member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church under the late Pastor H.Y. Stevenson and over the years supported numerous ministries. A hard-working provider for his family, in 1988 William retired from Luke Air Force Base, where he formed enduring friendships working as a civilian munitions handler. Not only were they loving parents to their two children, Ronald and Sheila, but William enjoyed entertaining nieces and nephews and was also the proud grandfather of three grandsons and parent-figure for numerous other family members and friends over the years.
Before his beloved wife Arlene's passing, in June 2011, William was devoted daily to her care and well-being for 52 years.
In addition to Arlene, William has also been reunited in heaven with his parents, George and Mary Washington, and sister Elenora DeMore. He leaves to continue his legacy his son, Ron, Tokyo, Japan; daughter, Sheila (Billy) and grandsons Aaron, Jeremy and Daniel Sprinkle, White Hall, AR; sister, Martha Ann (Oliver) Brown, Oklahoma City, OK; brother, Martin (Helgard) Washington, Frankfurt, Germany; and a host of cherished family and friends near and far. Visitation and Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 12, 2012, at Heritage Funeral Chapel, 6830 West Thunderbird Road, Peoria, Arizona. Interment will be at the V.A. National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
