Illig, William P., Jr.
Born December 9, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri, and died July 13, 2016 surrounded by family in Tucson, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Jewell; children, Marie Huff (Ken); Deborah Melcher; Jonathan Illig (Carmen); Julie McGinn (Brian); Yvonne Dooley (Richard); Christina Riccio (Ron); Leah Claypool (Mike); and Erik Rothrock; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Joanne Anderson and Susan Ponchetti ("Bugs"); sister-in-law, Patricia Hartson (Roy); former spouse, Gloria King; many nieces and nephews; and friends who will miss his wisdom and wit. He was preceded in death by his parents, William P. and Margaret Illig, and former spouse, Katherine Illig. He graduated from high school in St. Louis in 1951. A lifelong learner, he earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Arizona after a 30-year career at Mountain Bell Telephone Co. He then worked as a trainer with the UA Adult Fitness program, and was an academic advisor and a board member of the UA College of Medicine. He held advanced degree black belts in judo, karate and aikido and operated the Aikido Center of Southern Arizona in Tucson. He was an antique appraiser, oil painter, and baseball fan. His memory lives on in all who knew him. A celebration of his life will be held July 30, 2016. Family, friends may email illigfamily1@gmail.com for details.
