Terrence Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 24, 2011.
Smith, Terrence "Terry" Eugene
84, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2011, in Phoenix, Arizona. Terry was born June 29, 1927, in Phoenix, to Albert M. Smith, from Williams, Arizona, and Patricia Josephine Tummins Smith, from Winkleman, Arizona. He attended North High School and graduated from Arizona State University (then Arizona State College). He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. After returning from military service, Terry married Ruth Lamb on April 2, 1948, in Phoenix, and together they had three daughters. He worked for Arizona Public Service for 33 years, starting with digging ditches and eventually retiring from his position as a Manager in Gas Services in 1982. He was a
great husband and father, and many of his interests and hobbies were ones that included his family. He fixed everything in the household, including cars, and built the back yard playground that all the neighborhood kids enjoyed playing in. He played the piano and was a wonderful dancer. He and Ruth could really jitterbug! He was a wonderful story-teller with a great sense of humor, and having lived in Arizona all his life, he had many stories to tell. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting, bowling, rock collecting, coaching softball, jewelry-making and golf. His family has many happy memories of road trips to the Pacific Coast, camping, Christmas tree cutting, Sky-Y Family Camp, tubing down the Salt River, and back yard barbeques. He and Ruth belonged to Pinetop Lakes Country Club and Villa de Paz Golf Club. Terry is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Lamb Smith, his daughters, Sandra L. Alcumbrac (Kurt) and Adrienne D. Hogate (Rob), his granddaughters, Torill B. Smith (Josh) and Jamie M. Alcumbrac, all of Phoenix, Arizona, cousin, Colleen Tummins Goffigon, who also attended North High School and now resides in California. Terry is preceded in death by his father, Albert M. Smith, his mother, Patricia Tummins Smith Harris, his step-father, James W. Harris, and his beloved daughter, Brenna Louise Smith. He will be interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, with a memorial service to be held during a cooler time of the year. His family wishes to thank the kind and caring staff at Covenant Southwest Hospice for their warm and professional care during his last weeks, as well as his numerous friends and extended family who contributed to many happy times. If desired, contributions may be made in Terry's name to the City of Hope, Duarte, California. Please visit the online Guest Book at www.obits.azcentral.com

Terry and I played and marched in the N.P.H.S. Band for at least 3 & 1/2 yrs. together. We got to march at the Half-Times at the Football games and about every parade that came along thru the years,
In all those years I never saw Terry "Lose his Cool" as he was always calm and treated everyone with respect. A dependable friend always.
The last time we saw each other was at our 60th NPHS Class of 1945 reunion party. He and his lovely Ruth were dancing like Sweethearts that they always were. We both were in the Navy at the same time. Sorry to hear we lost him. I know he was one good person. All who knew him will surely miss him. RIP Buddy!

Grandpa - you are were so special for so many people! I remember sitting on your lap doing anagrams and math problems when I was little, riding around in the golf cart, making model cars and planes and how you and Grandma helped with our Junior Golf camp for multiple summers. I am thankful to have shared a dance with you at my wedding and I am so proud to be your granddaughter. I love you so much!

Dad, you taught me well. So many life lessons too numerous to list, but the most important and appreciated was unconditional love. With you and Mom as my role models, I have, with the help of Kurt, raised two wonderful daughters. That is the best testimonial ever. I love you forever.

Dad - Thank you for the wonderful childhood memories. You are the most wonderful Dad anyone could have hoped to have had and that is why all my friends loved you and Mom so much. When we grew up on Flower Street, all the neighborhood kids always knew they could come to the Smith house and be welcomed with open arms, loved and not judged. You were the best and I will always love you forever and ever.
Your loving daughter, Adrienne (Aye)

Such fond memory of the Smith's on Flower Street. I can smell cigar smoke coming from the back yard and picture later when Terry had one in his teeth with no fire. I can hear Ruth and Terry's voices and the ping pong ball volley back and forth as Ruth crushes another victim’s bravado "I can take her". I asked Terry if he had ever beat Ruth at ping pong: "Yeah, but I think she lets me win just so she'll have someone to practice with."
Always the host, I remember Terry's suggestion of building a gate in his fence so that the Thomason's didn't have to walk around to the front and through the house to access the swimming pool. What a great life Terry lived having influenced so many with his quiet and never ending Friendship. The strong devotion to his lovely bride, two beautiful daughters and their Families is an astounding legacy.
God bless Terry and all that know him.
