Karatz, Robert (Bob)
Bob Karatz, 93, lived a full life as an entrepreneur businessman, philanthropist, husband, father, grandparent, great-grandparent and friend to so many others. He passed away peacefully at his home in Scottsdale January 27, 2014. He was born June 25, 1920. Bob spent the first 50 years of his life in Minneapolis graduating from Carleton College with a B.A. in history. He loved Minnesota and many of his lifelong friends were from Minneapolis. He served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II. Bob owned several businesses including hotel development which brought him to Scottsdale to build and operate the Scottsdale Hilton Hotel. From the moment he arrived in Arizona, Bob became an active booster of Phoenix and the surrounding area. He was President of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce and named to Scottsdale's History Hall of Fame. Bob was an enthusiastic supporter of the Scottsdale Center for the Arts and served three terms as its founding Chairman. Bob also believed that Scottsdale deserved its own Western Museum and has championed the construction of the new Scottsdale Museum of the West. Bob was a many decade supporter of Israel Tennis Centers, which encourages Jewish and Arab children in Israel to learn and develop tennis skills together. Bob funded the construction of the first five clay courts in Israel to assist Israeli youth develop competitive clay court skills. Bob continued to follow Carleton College's ascension to excellence and funded a broad scholarship fund for students interested in public speaking and debate. As a longtime resident of Arizona, Bob was an avid fan of Arizona State and created a scholarship fund at the Hugh Downs School of Communications, one of Bob's closest friends. Bob remained a loyal supporter of the Phoenix Symphony, Phoenix Art Museum and the Heard Museum. Bob was an avid reader and fitness was always an important part of his life. He and Sue traveled the world on a regular basis until his European trip last summer when he fell ill. With all of these accomplishments, Bob's priorities rested with his family and friends. Bob was married to Dearie Karatz until her passing in 1985. He was fortunate to have remarried Sue Karatz and has been married to her for over 22 years. Bob has two sons, Bruce and Robert Jr., both of whom live in Southern California. Bob has three grandchildren, Elizabeth Faraut, Matthew and Teddy Karatz and four great grandchildren, Juliette, Thomas and Clara Faraut and Levi Karatz. Interment was held at Hillside Memorial Park in California. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Congregation Beth Israel, 10460 North 56th Street, Scottsdale, Arizona. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be given to the . Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
