Passed away peacefully on March 27, 2014. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by her three children, Diane Hall (Phil), Tom (Diane), and Bob; her brother, Thor Norland, Jr., (and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren). Her husband, John Melichar, and a brother Carmen Engelbert predeceased her. Thelma was born on a farm near Conroy, Iowa on May 14, 1921 to Lina and Thor Norland, Sr. After graduation from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Thelma worked as a legal secretary for Barthinius Wick. In the early '40s she recorded two songs: "To You" and "Golden Earrings". She played the piano and always had her home filled with music. In 1948, she married John Melichar. They attended All Saints Catholic Church and were members of the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1971, she and her family moved to Scottsdale. She loved her family get-togethers and her golf. She enjoyed her bridge groups and leaves behind many friends. Her positive attitude and smile will be missed. or any no-kill animal shelter. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 9-10 am at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help following the visitation at 10 am. Burial will follow at Green Acres Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Rd, Scottsdale.
