Makings, Richard D. "Dick"
Departed this life on May 2, 2014 in Scottsdale, AZ. He was born July 17, 1935 on the family farm south of Trenton, Nebraska and educated in the Trenton Public Schools. He then enrolled in McCook, NE Junior College and finished his degrees at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado earning both the BA and MA degrees. After college Dick taught and coached at Gunnison High School. In 1962 the family moved to Scottsdale where he accepted a position teaching and coaching at Camelback High School. After leaving the teaching profession Dick joined IBM as a marketing representative and later was promoted to marketing manager. He later entered into the field of Real Estate marketing from which he retired. In 2004 Dick and his son Mike were inducted into Western State College Athletic Hall of Fame, the first and only Father and Son so honored. Dick was a loyal fan of the Sun Devils, Suns, Cardinals and Diamondbacks. He was a wonderful, loving Husband, Dad, Papa, and Friend and will be deeply missed by many. Dick was preceded in death by his parents John and Mable Makings and brother Marvin. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean (Felker) Makings, children Jenifer (Mike) Devine, Mike (Marcia) Makings, Merle (Elizabeth) Makings, and Joni Rae Makings; grandchildren Jenna (Brent) Edwards, Shaunna (Ryan) Sommers, Brian Devine, Michael, Kelsey and Kimberly Makings, Ryan and Amanda Southard; great grandchildren Andrew, Isaac, and Audrey Edwards, Collin and Maddison Sommers; sister Lois (Bob) Schmidt of Grand Island, NE and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be held Thursday, May 8th at 10:00am at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E Indian School, Scottsdale, with burial to follow at Paradise Memorial Gardens, 9300 E. Shea, Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to and or WSCU Athletic Department, Gunnison, Colorado 81230.
