John Lewis Dascanio, 77, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2014 at his home in Mesa, AZ. John was born on June 24, 1936 in Woodbury, New Jersey to the late Anthony and Madeline Dascanio. As a child, John grew up with his siblings on the tropical island of Aruba until age 16 when WWII forced a return to the United States. John completed his high school education at Riverside Military Academy, Gainesville, GA and graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a BA in Political Science. He earned a Masters Degree in Political Science from the University of Missouri. In Dec 1961 he married Mary Sue Thomas and they had seven children, twins not surviving birth. They were divorced in 1994. He became father to four more children and grandfather to others when he and Diane Pearcy were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple in April 1995. Together John and Diane served three missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. During the past year, they served in the LDS temple in Mesa, AZ. Grandpa John loved all of his grandchildren and was equally loved by them. John served 34 years in the United States Army retiring as the Commandant of the Pine Bluff Arsenal as a Colonel in the Army Chemical Corp. He received a Purple Heart during his combat tour in Vietnam and also served in Korea, Germany and other locations throughout the world. He received many awards and citations in addition to being a master parachutist. After retiring from the military, he managed the logistics of a service and security company in Scottsdale, AZ. John continued to love his country and to serve in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints including the Boy Scouts of America. John was an avid hunter, outdoor enthusiast and loved his pickup truck. Most of all, John loved the Lord, his wife, Diane, their combined children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John is survived by his wife, Diane; brothers: Robert (Josephine) Dascanio, Worcestem, MA; Kenneth Dascanio, Middleville, MI; children: Jackie Borders (David), Clarksville, TN; Jeff Dascanio (Angela), Bigelow, AR; John Dascanio (Aurora), Roanoke, TX, Laura Dascanio Bowman, Keller, TX, Sarah Fuhriman (Chris), Williamsburg, VA; Robyn Keesling (Jon), Brussels, Belgium, Kim Deering (Keith), Mesa, AZ, Jodi Parker (Alan), Mesa, AZ and Randy Woldberg (Nikol), Tempe, AZ. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014, 10 AM at the Maricopa North Stake Center, 1718 N. Date St., Mesa, AZ 85201, with a viewing beginning at 9:00 AM. Meldrum Mortuary handled the arrangements.
