Woods, Mary Bell
October 11, 1923 - June 1, 2014. Born in Wichita, Kansas to Minor and Lola Scott. She grew up on the family farm during the Dust Bowl and the Depression. After losing the farm, the family moved to the city where she completed high school in 1941. During the war Mary Bell held various jobs with different airplane manufacturers. In 1942 she met Donald F. Woods who flew in and out of Wichita picking up planes and gliders as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. Don and Mary Bell corresponded throughout the war while Don served in the Pacific. Immediately upon Don's return from service they married and took up residence on Long Island where they raised two children. For many years they lived in Syosset, New York and belonged to the Huntington Country Club and the Sagamore Yacht Club. After Don's retirement from Eastern Airlines in 1980 they moved to Sun City, Arizona where they belonged to the Union Hills CC. After Don passed away in 1997, Mary Bell moved into Moon Valley, Arizona and became a parishioner of St. Paul R.C. Church. Mary Bell was a stereotypical 1950's housewife devoted to her husband, her children, her home and various charities. She was a brownie and cub scout leader, president of the local PTA, president of the Mercy League which raised funds for Mercy Medical Center, Rockville Centre, New York and a member of P.E.O Phoenix Chapter. Mary Bell is survived by her two children Donald Woods, Jr. of Santa Monica, California and Catherine Woods of Moon Valley, Arizona; her four grandchildren Jennifer Dietsch of Dallas, Texas, Darby Gardner of Pacific Palisades, California, Michael Woods of Los Angeles, California and Maura Woods of Chicago, Illinois, six great-grandchildren and five God children. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM, with Rosary at 7:00 PM on Friday, June 6, 2014 at Hansen Mortuary, 8314 N. 7th Street, Phoenix. Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at St. Paul Catholic Church, 330 W. Coral Gables Drive, Phoenix. She will be entombed at Sunland Cemetery.
