Laurence Richard "Larry" Gates Obituary
Gates, Laurence Richard (Larry)
was born in Tucson, Az. on September 24th, 1936, to Richard W. and Beulah R. (Schoolmeir) Gates. The son of a railroad man, he traveled throughout the Western States as a youth, eventually settling in Phoenix. Larry graduated High School in Redbluff, Ca. and found work as a surveyor, a vocation he continued all of his working life. Starting out at the lowest position, he worked his way up, eventually becoming a Registered Land Surveyor, a professional distinction difficult to obtain, and of which he was very proud. He was also an accomplished musician, playing both trumpet and fiddle. He played with many of the big names in the Country Music field, and spent his later years playing in Phoenix with a variety of local bands, including one with his Brother, Michael. Larry married Alleyne E. Davis on May 30th 1955, they had three children together; Richard, Michael and Tammi during their 7 year marriage. Following their divorce, Larry found a new Love in Derry Lee (Barnhart); they were married on March 20th 1964 in Winterhaven CA. They were blessed with a son Jeffrey Paul, and enjoyed 50 Happy and Loving Years together as man and wife. During his life, Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his Family. He was an accomplished woodworker, who enjoyed building toys for each new Grandchild, and spent much of his "retired" time doing projects. He Loved telling stories, he had a story for everything. He was Happiest when surrounded by Family and Friends; he was a loving and caring person whose concern for others always outshined any he might have had for himself. Larry is survived by his loving wife Derry, his brother Michael Sullivan, his children Richard and Christine Gates, Michael Gates, Tammi and Bryan Zufall and Jeffrey Gates and Starr; 9 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren. Larry passed away peacefully at Home with Family by his side on Sunday, June 8th 2014 at the age of 77 years.
