Dene Lonier Lusby Obituary
Lusby, Dene Lonier
Dene Lonier Lusby, 80, of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away peacefully on July 12, 2014 with his wife at his side. He was born August 6, 1933 in Baltimore, MD to Oscar ("Sam") and Hazel (Funkhouser) Lusby. He graduated from McDonough School, Johns Hopkins University and University of Maryland School of Law. Although an excellent student, athlete and leader in high school, attending Hopkins opened opportunities "beyond his imagination." His years at Hopkins were fondly remembered by him for the intellectual stimulation and extraordinary opportunity of learning with outstanding professors and innovators, but also for the camaraderie of his Blue Jays lacrosse teammates and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity brothers (an only child, he said "he finally had brothers"). He practiced law for almost four decades, mostly in public service, as Baltimore City prosecutor, attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. and the Federal Trade Commission, Anti-Trust Division in Los Angeles, CA. After returning to Baltimore and a brief career in private practice, he was appointed Executive Director of the Maryland Inmate Grievance Commission, and later, as a Division Chief, Maryland Public Defenders Office. He was also a member of Mensa. After retirement, he continued to feed his intellectual curiosity, auditing astronomy, physics, and art history and film classes at a local university. He was an avid reader and loved the arts - painting, music, theater -- and never lost his enthusiasm for cheering on Hopkins lacrosse teams. In 1997, he and his wife, Ruth, moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he "never had time to go back to work." He self-taught himself to paint, took piano lessons and enjoyed playing popular and jazz music. He played tennis, biked, regularly went to the gym, delved into family genealogy, traveled and enjoyed the company of good friends. He had a wry sense of humor that could both puzzle and delight others. Dene is survived by his wife, Ruth Atkinson Lusby, his children, Elizabeth Hand and Rosalind Nelson (Russell), three step-children, Amy Rada (James), Sherry Atkinson (John Robert Cross) and J. Thomas Atkinson, II, and six grandchildren and step-grandchildren. He was a loving son, kind and devoted husband, caring father and good friend. He will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dene's name to the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation, Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Endowment, 10001 N. 92nd St, Scottsdale, AZ 85258 or Salvation Army. A celebration of Dene's life will be held on Friday, July 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary, 6500 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85254.
