It has been a while, but Reese is still in my memories, thoughts and prayers. I hope the two of you are living a fulfilling life knowing that he is watching over you, that others are thinking of him like myself, and that you raised one of the finest people I have ever met.

Mr. and Mrs. Washington,
May God's presence and the kindness of others comfort you in your time of great loss. I had the privilege of being Reese's art teacher at Sun Valley from first through fourth grades. He truly was a kind, patient, insightful, creative and gentle child. I especially remember his warm, wide smile and happy disposition as he worked on artwork in my classroom. He was always fully present and involved in whatever we were doing. God bless you both as you recover from this tragedy. I feel fortunate to have crossed paths with Reese during those years.

I was fortunate to watch Reese grow over the last several years as an assistant in his grade's classrooms. I started at Coyote Hills the same year he did in Mrs. Farrow's 5th grade classroom. Reese was a wonderful, amazing young man ... always eager to make me laugh with his newest joke or story. He was always sharing anything that he thought would bring a smile to his friends and teachers. He had such a delightful, positive, and loving personality. He was kind to everyone around him ... he had all the traits that we adults are trying to instill in our children ~ kindness, thoughtfulness, respect, responsibility, and love for his family and friends! He and I had an ongoing conversation as he wanted my pink mechanical pencil (or at least one like mine)... Reese, I would love to give my pink pencil to you now ~ just to see your huge, happy smile again! You will be greatly missed by all of us who knew you! My prayers and heart are with you, Mr. and Mrs. Washington.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear Washingtons and other grieving readers,
It has taken me until this moment to be able to write. I am the teacher for gifted students at Coyote Hills and I have been so privileged to know and enjoy Reese for fifth, sixth, and seventh grade. All the growing and change and new thoughts and new ideas…with Reese, it was joy! His sparkle, wit, and thoughtfulness were absolutely delightful. (His medieval interpretation at our feast continues to bring smiles to many.) And knowing his parents, it was no wonder!
A poignant memory I have on this day is remembering Reese’s ability to discreetly observe subtle changes in the Project IDEAL classroom for hints of what might be happening next. It was not uncommon for Reese to find the pause and quiet moment for which he might approach me with either a suggestion of what we might think of exploring or doing or to suggest an interesting tidbit of fascinating tangential thought. It was also true that he would listen to any small suggestion I or another might make, and then it could not be forgotten if perceived as a great idea and “When are we going to try that?”
Reese held onto the notion of reenacting an Aegean Sea battle with triremes. He even wanted to start building a fleet ahead of time… Lesson plans were made for the last week of December and then as school would go, this would have to wait until today. His gifted classmates and I are missing Reese tremendously.
We are challenging ourselves to live “life abundantly” and to feel blessed to have known such a wonderful soul as Reese Washington …as we make triremes today.
We are also finding comfort from our inspirational poetry unit. (These were played for peer review on January 7, prior to the news.) Some students included Psalms such as Psalms 23 and 46. And Reese left us a wonderful PhotoStory with his voice recorded reading a compassionate poem, to which he added his personal words, “…is now passed away, but is forever in his heart.” Truly, Reese is forever in our hearts.
May God continue to bless you and keep you,
Kirstie Dye

As I sit in my classroom in Minnesota looking at this darling boy's face and reading the messages of sympathy tears are flowing down my face. I am Kirstie Dye's sister and I know all too well how we teachers claim these children as our own. I am absolutely heartbroken for the dear mom and dad, the teachers, students and friends of this gifted and talented young man. Please know that we pray for God's healing of your hearts and bodies as you walk through this very difficult grieving process! From Minnesota with Love!

There is no greater bond than that between a parent and a child. Nothing will ever fill the void that is left and for some people the passing of time heals them and for others knowing your child is in a better place helps. No matter what helps always remember that each person handles things differently and at different rates. Do what is best for you and know that you are not alone. I know what it is like to lose a child.

To: the family of Reese Washington
May the God of comfort bring you to a place of peace in your time of grief. And when the time comes, may memories of Reese replace your tears with smiles. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
