Librado Cayco Obituary

Cayco, Librado D.
Ambassador Librado D. Cayco, 97, died on June 19, 2009, surrounded by family in his Phoenix, Arizona residence. He was a long-time diplomat, having served his native country, the Philippines, in far reaching parts of the globe. He also served as cabinet member in the capacities of Philippine Undersecretary and subsequently, Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Cayco was first a lawyer until he turned to diplomacy. Being an eloquent speaker and a top-notch debater (winning all of his debates bar none), it was no surprise that the Administration at the time sought him and convinced him that he could better serve the country in the field of diplomacy. Honesty and integrity were Ambassador Cayco's trademark and most redeeming qualities. The press corps befittingly nicknamed him "Honest Cayco". Hailing from humble beginnings in his province of Santa Rita, Pampanga, Ambassador Cayco's stellar rise in the diplomatic corps was noteworthy. Blessed with longevity, Ambassador Cayco is survived by Paquita, his wife of 70 years, nine of his 10 children (Linda Ramirez, Elsie Gee, Elenita Cayco-Lin, Orlando, Cynthia Bellinger, Marita Blakeman, Librado, Jr., Grace and Marjorie), as well as daughter-in-law Margie Davitt-Cayco, wife of his deceased son, Edgardo, 10 grandchildren ( Michael Ramirez, Lisa Trowbridge, Brandon Gee, Valentin Mirabile, Michael M. Lin, Ceon Cayco, Carrie Cayco-Weaver, Jessica Davitt-Cayco, Sebastian Blakeman, and Sara Cayco-Bellinger) as well as 7 great-grandchildren (Jordan & Brian Ramirez, Jack Trowbridge, Bailey & MacKenzie Cayco, Nolan & Hunter Weaver). He will be missed by his large family and international group of friends. Visitation will be held from 1-5PM, Sunday, June 28, 2009, Hansen Desert Hills Chapel, 6500 E. Bell Rd., Scottsdale. Funeral services will be held at 10AM, Monday, June 29, 2009, Hansen Desert Hills Chapel followed by entombment at St. Francis Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th St., Phoenix.

Grandpa was a man of intelligence, morals, and generosity. From my memories of him and the stories shared by others, I've come to develop an astounding perception of him that will always be engraved in my heart.

"Try not to become a man of success but a man of value."

This quote, by Albert Einstein, expresses an outlook on life that I feel Grandpa truly lived by. Not only was he a respected diplomat, but he was a father, a loving husband, and a caring grandfather. He was an asset to his country and his family that will be greatly missed. He instilled a sense of pride and ethics in me that I will carry for the rest of my life and I hope that in the future I will make him as proud of me as I am of him.

Until we meet again...

Your loving grandaughter,

Dear Mrs. Cayco, Linda and other family members,

Cookie and I extend our sympathy to you all on the recent passing of Mr. Cayco. Like you, we mourn his loss but also celebrate the extraordinary life he led and which he loved to share with us when we visited him in Phoenix.

In 1998, he and my mother, Amparing, enjoyed a nostalgic walk down memory lane as they talked about mutual friends from their New York days. Then in 2007, although his mobility was already limited, he could not only vividly recall events which took place in the late 1950's, but also showed us supporting pictures and documents!

I am sure he and my late parents, Luis and Amparing del Rosario, are now enjoying a wonderful reunion.

May God grant him eternal rest.

I will always remember Grandpa Cayco as one of the funniest people in the world. The humor our family shared with Grandpa was unlike any other. No matter what was going on or what dilemma you could be facing, as soon as Grandpa came around he could effortlessly make you chuckle or just put a smile on your face. He didn't have to tell a joke or put on a show, but as he graced you with his presence, you couldn't help but laugh at his loud, boisterous voice and the silly mix ups he would get himself into. I love you Grandpa and I will never forget the memories we shared. May you rest in peace and may your spirit watch over and protect me througout the rest of my life.

I have struggled to find the words to capture how I felt about Daddy -words somehow seem inadequate and one dimensional in describing the life force that was Librado D. Cayco.
Daddy left a mark on my heart and soul that I will treasure and carry with me with every breath I take.
We shared a mutual admiration . We both loved books, the eternal pursuit of learning as well as a passion for baseball--although Pong always supported the wrong team!
We shared common values. We both placed great stock in honesty, personal integrity, pride in one's work ,pursuing one's goals through education ,hard work and focus --but never taking the journey for granted.
Daddy had a heart of gold. He always was generous and eager to help anyone in need .He always would send little gifts or notes to remind you that you were in his thoughts. These little acts of kindness were central to his character and he led by example how to be a good citizen of the world.
I know he is up in heaven right now sitting next to Edgardo watching over all of us in his rightful place supervising and reviewing all the goings on!
Daddy loved his family dearly. I feel blessed to have had Daddy in my life.I have been enriched by his presence and by the love he bestowed on Jess and I so freely.
I will honor his memory by living each day fully, with intergrity ,and by taking the time to cherish and express my love to those around me without hesitation and with acceptance of each person's uniqueness. I will treasure others as I have be blessed to be treasured by Daddy.
With much love and gratitude,

Dear Dad,
Though you have left us in this world, I feel your presence all around me, guiding, taking care of me & the family. You have had an amazing life & now I know that you are at peace & happy in heaven with God, Ed, Tom, Lola, & that you are preparing the way for each of us to join you. I love you, Dad, & you are with me all the time....till we meet again.
Love you,
Cyndy

To Paquita and the entire Cayco family: Mr Cayco was an amazing man who lived a long, remarkable life. I always enjoyed his fascinating stories and his wit! He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and he will always be remembered. My thoughts are with you. Love,
