90, of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away August 26, 2010, at home peacefully surrounded by his family. Harry was born Hans Fernich on June 3, 1920, in Koblenz, Germany. Harry is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Lilo Fern. He is also survived by sons Ralph (Judy) and Daniel (Kar en) and grandchildren Courtney, Meghan, Jackie, and Paul who lovingly knew him as Opa. Harry was the sole surviving member of his family from the Holocaust, after having been interned in a concentration camp in Poland for over 4 years. After liberation, he ultimately emigrated to the United States and began his life anew in California, where he met his bride with whom he shared a common unspoken bond of being a Holocaust survivor. Harry moved to Arizona to reside closer to his sons and his grandchildren. At that time he began to speak more openly of the horrific past he survived. He became an avid speaker as part of the local Area Agency on Aging's Retired Seniors Volunteer Program's (RSVP) speakers bureau. He gave countless presentations to schoolchildren throughout Maricopa County speaking out against hatred and discrimination of any kind, and professing about his love for his adopted homeland of the United States. The family wishes to thank the staff of Homewatch CareGivers for the wonderful care provided, and in particular for the love and devotion shown by Stephanie, Rita, Vilma, Sharon, Ingrid, and Nancy. The family invites you to join them for a celebration of Harry's life to be held on Sunday, August 29, 2010, at 2:30PM, at Temple Chai in North Phoenix. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum or the Area Agency on Aging, Region One, Inc.
