LaVerne Earl Haugen Obituary
Haugen, LaVerne Earl
of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away peacefully at home on June 7, 2011, he was 86. He was born on March 4, 1925 on the family farm in Ambrose, North Dakota, the son of Andrew and Mabel Haugen. He began farming as a teenager and became one of the largest wheat farmers in North Dakota, Montana, and Saskatchewan, Canada farming more than 25,000 acres. He moved his family to the Valley in 1967 where he became a successful land speculator. He loved "the art of the deal", and his handshake was his word. He was a quiet man who loved to cook and entertain: always making sure that eveyone was having a good time. He enjoyed meeting new people and could be found socializing at one of his favorite local spots on any given weekend night. He liked movies but rarely gave them a "thumbs up". He was in fact the embodiment of "the self made man" - entrepreneur, world traveler, and an avid hunter and fisherman. LaVerne was a success in every way. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Lorie Alfeld, son Vern and wife Donna Haugen, and granddaughter Shelby Haugen. LaVerne touched the lives of many and will be missed by all who knew him. His keen intelligence, humor, kindness and generosity were rare and unique. Services will be held Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 10:00AM in the La Casa De Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E Bell Rd, Scottsdale, Az. Arrangements are being handled by Hansen Mortuaries 6500 E Bell Rd., Scottsdale, AZ. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
