passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. A beloved husband, father and friend, Joseph is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sandy; son Sean, daughter Caitlin, brother David and his sister Martha. Joseph was born in Covington, VA, in 1951 and moved to Phoenix at age 5, growing up in Central Phoenix. Joseph was an actor and dancer from a young age, performing at Phoenix Children's Theatre with Phoenix Young Entertainers and the Lew King Rangers on local television. He attended North High School & Phoenix College. Joseph earned a B.A. of Philosophy from Arizona State University in 1975 and completed his Juris Doctor in 1980, also at ASU. He was a member of the Arizona and American Bar Associations and was Lawyer of the Month for Arizona Attorney At Law Magazine, August, 2011. A frequent lecturer, Joseph held Certification as a Specialist in Bankruptcy Law. He was the former Chair of the State Bar Bankruptcy Section and the Former Chair of the American Bar Association Bankruptcy Committee of the GP Section. Lecturer; Strategic Considerations in Bankruptcy and Pre-Bankruptcy Planning, State Bar of AZ, 1986; Bankruptcy for the Non-Specialist: Representing Creditors in Bankruptcy Court, State Bar of AZ, 1986; Protecting Your Rights in a Dangerous Business Environment, State Bar of AZ, 1989; Protecting Rights in a Dangerous Business Environment, Bankruptcy Symposium; Current Topics in Personal Bankruptcies and Real Estate Reorganizations, 1990. Joseph led a Panel, The Chapter 11 Process: A Practical Approach for the Practitioner, American Bar Association Annual Meeting, 1994; and held an AVVO.com Rating:10 ("superb"); Martindale rating: AV; Arizona's Finest Lawyers. He was the author of several blogs on topics ranging from bankruptcy law to alternative health, and from politics to Shotokan Karate.
At the time of his death, Joseph was training for his 2nd degree black belt in Shotokan Karate. His other hobbies and interests included ballroom dancing, science fiction, historic medieval martial arts re-inactments, holding blogging seminars with anyone who was interested, and advocating the benefits of Vitamin C. A visitation is scheduled from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, Monday, October 3, 2011 at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., in Scottsdale. A funeral Mass is scheduled at 10:30am, Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 11300 N. 64th Street, in Scottsdale. Burial will take place at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Phoenix at 48th Street and Oak.
