Phyllis Silberman Obituary

Silberman, Phyllis G.
of Phoenix Arizona passed away on Tuesday, July 2. She was born July 19, 1930 in Des Moines Iowa. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 62 years Sam, her two daughters Liz and Gail, her brother Harold, her sister Beverly and two grandchildren Conor and Hannah. Phyllis received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Phyllis was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She was a perpetual student and charismatic teacher whose intellectual accomplishments inspired her family, friends and students during her entire adult life. Phyllis was a Great Books Foundation leader in Highland Park, IL and Phoenix, Az. from the 1960's through the 1980's. Over the past 20 years she was a popular and beloved instructor, teaching analysis of the Short Story and Reader's Theater for the Lifelong Learning Program at Phoenix College. Phyllis had a rare gift for leading her students toward a deeper understanding of the challenging work of some of the greatest thinkers and authors throughout history. Phyllis had a tremendous impact on all the lives she touched. She was truly interested in others and was a trusted confidant who at once made people feel comfortable and special. Whether she had just met someone or knew them for decades, Phyllis knew how to ask just the right questions to draw people out. Her insatiable curiosity, creativity and strong values caused her to strive for excellence in all aspects of her life. Family, friends and students will sorely miss her intellect, special sense of humor and expertise in a variety of subject matter ranging from Shakespearian plays to sports. For those who were lucky enough to call her a friend, Phyllis gave of herself and helped so many people live better and more meaningful lives.

I consider myself fortunate to have known and loved Phyllis for over 20 years, and to have been a part of her family - If there is such thing as a perfect mother-in-law, she was it.
