Alan Schackner Obituary

Schackner, Alan Blackie
World famous harmonica virtuoso, age 96, passed away on November 19, 2013 after a long illness. Blackie started his musical career at the age of 12 on the famous children's hour. From there he went on to perform on TV variety shows: Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, Arthur Godfrey, ETC. Then on to Broadway to perform in the Pulitzer Prize play, "The Time of your Life", where Fred Kelly danced to his music. When the show went on the road he sent for his girlfriend Bertha. They were married in Chicago City Hall by the Mayor. Soon after, he went into the Army and fought in many battles, including the Battle of the Bulge, where he was blown out of a jeep. After a long hospital stay, he was honorably discharged after 4 years of service in 1945. After the war, he was honored to perform for 3 presidents: Eisenhower, Nixon, and Carter. He retired in 1990. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Bertha, son Robert, daughter-in-law Dawn, daughter Linda, grandson Steven, and granddaughter Maria. Blackie will be buried at Sunland Memorial Park. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Condolences may be offered at www.sunlandmemorial.com

Dear Family of Blackie,

I had just finished converting my 8mm movies of Blackie when we met in the 1960s and wanted to share when I received the sad news.

I will send a personal note via mail to the last known address. Please inform if changed.

Sadly,
Richard Harris
