Mary Lewis Schilling Obituary
Schilling, Mary Lewis
Mary Barbara Lewis Schilling died peacefully on April 17, 2014. Mary was born in St. Paul, MN on July 15, 1923, the only child of Edna Caroline Munson and Noah Edgar Lewis. She grew up in Hinsdale, IL and attended Hinsdale Township High School where she excelled in debate. She was the only girl on the debate team when they travelled to Los Angeles, where against all odds, they won the 1939 national debate championship. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1945. At age fifty she was accepted to Hamline University Law School where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in December 1977. In 1947 she married Paul Kehne (Buzz) Schilling of St. Paul, MN. They first settled in Waterville, Maine then moved in 1955 to St. Paul, MN where they lived until they moved permanently to Carefree, AZ in 1999. Mary was a devoted mother of her four children, adored her grandchildren and was especially fond of the many dogs and cats she cared for throughout her life. Mary believed strongly in the power of education, and was active in community service and politics. She was involved in the United Way of St. Paul from 1957-1980 serving as the President of the Board of the Volunteer Bureau. In Carefree, AZ she helped in the development of the Desert Foothills Library and helped local schools through the Foothills Community Foundation. From 1978-1988 she was a member of the Board of Trustees of Hamline University. In 2001 Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. For the past eight years, due to the progression of her disease, she was a resident of the memory support unit at Vi at Grayhawk in Scottsdale. Mary's children would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at Vi for the outstanding, loving care they provided for their mother. She is survived by her children: Paul and Marcia Schilling of Anchorage, AK; Ruth Schilling Harwood and Lewis Harwood of Bethesda, MD; Ann and Dr. Fergus McKiernan of Marshfield, WI; Lisa S. Greenman and Bruce Arlen of Cave Creek, AZ; nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Her husband of 65 years, Paul, predeceased her on November 20, 2012. A memorial service will be held in Minnesota on Monday, May 19th at 1pm in the Bigelow Chapel of United Theological Seminary, 3000 Fifth St. NW, New Brighton, MN 55112. Memorials may be made to the Desert Foothills Library, P.O. Box 4070, Cave Creek, AZ 85327 or The Humane Society.
