Green, Mary Elizabeth
83, passed away on 21 December 2014. Mary was born in Jamaica New York on March 15, 1931 to George and Mary (Giles) Green. Mary graduated from Queens College in 1952 and began teaching high school on Long Island, NY. Mary received her M.A. from St John's University in 1961. and in 1962 received the prestigious John Hay Fellowship for high school teachers. She was awarded a University of Chicago fellowship in 1964 to work on her Ph.D. in English which she received from the University of Chicago in 1969. Mary moved to Arizona in 1967 and joined the faculty at ASU, retiring as the Assistant Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1992. Throughout her life Mary travelled and cherished her time at Ivy Lea in the 1000 Islands in Canada, where she spent most of her summers throughout her life. Mary was a parishioner at St Patrick's' church of Scottsdale and St Brendan's Church in Rockport, Ontario. Mary is survived by her niece, Jennifer Giustra of Phoenix and Paul Benito, nephew, Patrick Benito, Great Nephew and Declan Benito, Great- Great nephew, of Warwick Rhode Island, and her dog Sparky. Mary is preceded in death by her brother, Giles Green, and her sisters, Francis Giustra, Veronica Burns and Agnes Benito. Services for Mary will be on 30 January 2015 at 1100 at St Patrick Catholic Community Church, 10815 North 84th Street, Scottsdale. Donations to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E Flower St Phoenix 85014. in lieu of flowers. Internment will be at St Brendan's Church in Rockport Ontario at a later date.
