Edwin Barbey Obituary

Barbey, Edwin Quier "Bud"
died on June 13, 2015 in his home in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Born in Reading Pennsylvania in 1926, he was one of two children of John Edward and Catherine Quier Barbey. He is the fourth of five children of John Edward Barbey. His father's family founded what is known today as VF Corporation, a multi brand apparel company, as well as other businesses in the Reading, Pennsylvania region including Barbey's Sunshine Beer brewery. His mother's family founded other businesses in the Reading region as well, including the Reading newspaper, the Reading Eagle, which is still family owned and operated today.

Mr. Barbey grew up in Greenfields, a residential community near the city of Reading. He graduated from the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania and attended both Yale and Babson College before going to work at Vanity Fair Mills, as VF Corporation was known at that time. He married Ruth Virginia Diener, of Wyomissing Pennsylvania, in 1956. He retired from Vanity Fair after 25 years of service in various capacities, and eventually moved to Arizona where he lived for the past forty years.

Mr. Barbey lived an active life, traveling widely and owning homes at various times in Cape Cod, Massachusetts; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Mittersill, New Hampshire; and Coronado, California. He pursued many interests and was an avid sailor and sailboat racer. Most of all, he enjoyed music, opera in particular, and art. He had a wonderful and insightful aesthetic sense which he passed on to his children and others. He valued work and accomplishment and was, in many ways, a Renaissance Man.

Mr. Barbey is survived by three children, Peter D. Barbey (Pamela Terry Barbey) of Oley, PA, Jacques D. Barbey (Raquel Barbey) of Phoenix, AZ, and Ruth Virginia Barbey Spalding of Sandpoint, ID and three grandchildren, Matthew Barbey, Noah Barbey and Will Spalding. He is also survived by his brother, John Edward Barbey Jr. of La Jolla California.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church of the Ascension 4015 East Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, Arizona, Tuesday, June 30th at 10 AM, followed by a graveside service on the church grounds. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Arizona Humane Society.
