I met Mel at a Louisville Redbirds game. It actually might have been a triple A all star game. He was so kind to me. I was around 8 years old. Sharing his time just to talk to some kid about baseball meant the world to me. He gave me a copy of his book. I didn´t know until seeing this obituary that he went to LSU. I´m a diehard LSU fan from Louisville Kentucky that´s named after a U of K player. I hope he lived his best life. Thank you.

Thinking of the good times we had with Mel visiting baseball parks and his friendship over many years......He is missed.....Remember the day we took Tommy Lasorda to watch a Texas Longhorns Baseball practice when he was visiting Austin.......Mel was one of a kind and the hardest worker I have ever been around.....

Mel was deliberate in his decision-making skills and that proved that thinking through learned experience and a dependable value system is key to personal success. Not to impress, but to be dependable. Proverbs 15:28, 31; 16:21; 17:3.
