Bill F. Steele(1928 - 2013)

Bill F. Steele July 17, 1928 - November 30, 2013 Bill was born in Wharton Creek, Arkansas on July 17th 1928 to John T. and Grace Steele. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Grant, Ralph, Joe, Carl, and sister Clora Lewis. Bill's family moved to Bakersfield in 1941 after the eldest brother Grant joined the Air Force and was stationed at Minter Field in Shafter. Bill graduated from East Bakersfield High School. He excelled at track as a sprinter and eventually held a California State relay title. He met his wife of 62 years Irene at EBHS. Bill entered the Air Force during the Korean War conflict and was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base Alaska, attached to the headquarters unit. After returning to Travis AFB he proposed and was married to Irene (Curran). After the Air Force Bill & Irene returned to Bakersfield where Bill worked for Kern County Land Company and also attended night classes at Bakersfield College in accounting. Later Bill worked for Oilfield Construction Company, and then started his career with Bakersfield Sandstone Brick Company where he remained until his retirement in 2007. Bill was active in the Boy Scouts with his boys Tom & John. He belonged to the Masonic Temple #224, the Optimist Club, Bakersfield East Rotary, all of which he enjoyed. His passion was fly fishing. He fished almost every weekend during the season. He was once given a bumper sticker by a friend that said "Fish tremble at the sound of my name". Bill enjoyed his family and his friends. He often told stories of growing up in Arkansas hunting and fishing with his brother Joe. He loved history particularly the Civil war and WWII, gardening, photography, sports and especially watching his grandchildren grow into solid productive citizens. He was very much a gentleman. He will be missed by many for his kindness, and his wonderful sense of humor. Bill is survived by his wife Irene, sons Tom Steele (Maria) & John Steele, grandchildren Natalie, Paul, Mark, Patrick, and many other relatives that all meant very much to him. The family would like to thank Bill's "Pal" and caregiver Serina Johnson for her loving care.
