Donald Joseph Jacobs(1923 - 2013)

Donald Joseph Jacobs August 1, 1923 - July 18, 2013 Donald Joseph Jacobs was born on August 1, 1923 in Verango County, Pennsylvania. He passed away on July 18, 2013 in Bakersfield, California. His parents were Chet and Beulah Jacobs of Clintonville, Pennsylvania. Don was raised in Clintonville and he attended nearby Bradford High School where he excelled in gymnastics and water polo. In 1941 Bradford High won the district championship in gymnastics and Don qualified for the state championships in the parallel bars event. After graduation from high school in 1941, Don and his family moved to California where he would spend the rest of his life. He went to work for Core Lab and did geological work for them in the petroleum industry. In 1953 he started his own geological mud logging service called Jacobs Formation Logging Company. He continued this business until he retired in 1988. In the 1970's Don became a pilot and enjoyed flying his Cessna 150 for many years. Don was an outdoorsman; he particularly loved backpacking and fly fishing in the high Sierra's. He would make several trips a year backpacking into the southern Sierra Mountain range well into his 70's. Don is predeceased by his parents, Chet and Beulah and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Olga along with his children and their spouses; Patrick and Judy Jacobs, Phillip and Cindy Jacobs, Christopher and Germaine Jacobs, Mary Kay Atchison, Susan and Stan Newman, as well as his sister, Ann Jones. Don is also survived by his grandchildren: Timothy Jacobs, Matthew Jacobs, Daniel Newman, Ryan Jacobs, Shelby Atchison, Nicholas Jacobs, P.J. Atchison, Peter Newman, Thomas Newman, Madeline Atchison and Gracie Jacobs. Services will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013 with a viewing at 8:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 9:00 a.m., both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 900 H Street, Bakersfield, California. The pallbearers will be his grandchildren and interment will immediately follow at Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St. Francis Church or Garces Memorial High School.
