Donald Wendell Calhoun(1918 - 2012)

Donald Wendell Calhoun 1918-2012 Donald Calhoun, 94, who lived for many years in Bakersfield, died on November 6, 2012, quietly and peacefully at home as he had hoped for, after a long life of service. He was born in 1918 to Wendell and Leore Calhoun. During his early years, the family lived in a number of communities in the Rocky Mountain West, and later lived in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. During World War II, he was inducted into the U.S. Army with conscientious objector status. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Georgia, and the Master of Theology degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. During the War, Donald met his wife, Elizabeth, and upon completion of his degree, they were appointed as missionaries to Ethiopia by the Baptist General Conference. Five years later, upon returning to the United States, the family settled in Berkeley, where Don attended graduate school and received the Master of Education degree. The family attended Oakland's Lakeside Baptist Church, where Don served on the Board of Deacons. The family subsequently moved to Bakersfield where Don worked for 25 years as a school psychologist, and served in various capacities as a member of Shalimar Baptist Church and Parkside Church. Following Elizabeth's death, Don moved back to the Bay Area, residing with his daughter. He was a regular participant in activities at the North Oakland Senior Center and attended services at the Berkeley Friends Church. Don was preceded in death by his wife and by his father, mother, and stepmother; by an infant son, and by many other relatives including four brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law. He is survived by four sons, a daughter, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; by a sister, two sisters-in-law and numerous nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held at Berkeley Friends Church, 1600 Sacramento Street, on Thursday, November 29 at 4 pm. An interment observance will be conducted at Hillcrest Cemetery in Bakersfield on Friday, November 30 at 3 pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any remembrances for Donald be made to the Bay Area Community Services (BACS) Adult Day Care Center, to the attention of Roberta Tracy, BACS Director, at the North Oakland Senior Center, 5714 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland, CA 94609, or to the Food Pantry at the Berkeley Friends Church, to the attention of Brian Young, Pastor.
