Dorothy Arnold(1908 - 2007)

Dorothy Arnold passed away peacefully at home on January 14, 2007. Dorothy was born in Waterloo, Iowa to Dr. Wilbert and Grace (Fruth) Shallenberger on May 23, 1908. She and her older brother grew up in Chicago, IL; Fostoria, Ohio; and New York City. It was an interesting childhood as the daughter of one of the first motion picture company owners, New York ballroom and restaurant owner, and championship livestock farmer. On July 18, 1931 she married Dr. Robert Keath in Chicago, Illinois. They had daughter Louann, prior to his early passing. Dorothy married Donovan Arnold in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 15, 1938. They moved back to Chicago where daughter Linda was born. In 1949, Dorothy moved back to Fostoria, Ohio and resided there for many years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, DAR, King's Daughters, and the Fostoria Women's Club. Many years were spent volunteering for the local American Heart Association, Red Cross, and the Fostoria Hospital. Dorothy moved to Bakersfield, CA, in 1986 to be near her daughter, Linda. The weekly sessions at First United Methodist Church became her favorite activity until her health deteriorated. Then the senior outreach program and Methodist friends came to her. Dorothy was a seasoned traveler who had traveled around the world as a young woman. She also had traveled extensively in this country. In later years her favorite trips had been back to the Midwest to see family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Linda and her husband, Bob Reedy; nephews, Fred Shallenberger and Bob Shallenberger; nieces, Rith Corning, Jeane Shallenberger, and Sharon Sallenberger; special family member, Harry Shumaker; 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Dorothy also had numerous great-great-great- grand nieces and nephews. All of them were loved deeply by this dear family matriarch. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Frederic; and daughter, Louann Keath Shumaker Hines. The family would like to thank Emerald Elder Care staff and especially Lydia for the loving care that was given to Dorothy over the past three years. Services will be held January 27th, by Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home in Fostoria, Ohio. Donations in her name may be made to the SPCA.
